Saratoga Opening Day is tomorrow, Thursday, July 15th and the Breeders' Juvenile Turf Champ, GOLDEN PAL, will be running with high expectations in the $120,000 Quick Call Stakes (G3T) with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard. The UNCLE MO colt is now racing for a Coolmore-affiliate ownership.
The three-year-old colt is racing fort the first time under new owners Susan Magnier, Michael tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg. He was purchased privately and will make his seasonal debut as the 1-2 morning line favorite in the 5 ½-furlong turf race. He will line up against seven other rivals, which includes FIRE SWORD and MR SIPPI.
GOLDEN PAL is familiar with the Saratoga turf having won the Skidmore Stakes last year on the track. He then went on to score the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T) at Keeneland for Randall Lowe. Wesley Ward continues as the trainer under the new ownership.
The colt underwent front ankle surgery to remove a chip since the Breeders' Cup. He has since posted a series of turf breezes over the last month in preparation for his debut. Ward says he is looking forward to getting his season started at Saratoga and will hopefully be back at the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint later this year.
The Breeders' Cup will be hosted at Del Mar this year. The Turf Sprint will run November 6th going five furlongs. The Quick Call Stakes could be a prep for an overseas trip for GOLDEN PAL as he is targeted for the Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) on August 20th at York Racecourse.
