Little Red Feather Racing, Gordon Jacobson, and Philip Belmonte's RED KING makes the surface switch from turf to dirt for Sunday's $100K Cougar II Stakes (G3) at Del Mar. This is a one mile and one-half journey over the main track, for three-year-old and upward.

RED KING is 4-1 on the morning-line, and breaks from post-position four for trainer Philip D'Amato. He is an ultra-consistent 7-year-old horse by ENGLISH CHANNEL who has been racing on Turf for his entire career (32 of 33 starts on Turf). He became a Grade 2 winner at this Del Mar track back in August 2020, and over his last ten races, he's hit the board 7 of 10 times. Jockey Umberto Rispoli rode him the last seven times, and is back again for the task. Come Sunday, RED KING gets relief from facing graded stakes competition, as he's had to in his past two starts.

Here's the field for the $100K Cougar II Stakes (G3):

The Post Time is 6:31 PM ET.

  2. CONTAGION: 6-1

  3. CAMPAIGN: 8-1

  4. RED KING: 4-1

  5. CUPID's CLAWS: 3-1

  6. TIZMAGICIAN: 8-5.

Note that RED KING's top career speed figure occurred in his Breeer's Cup Turf (G1) effort going twelve furlongs—the same distance he'll be running here, though on the dirt. In preparation for the Cougar II, RED KING submitted a sharp 5F workout, going 1:00.40 at Santa Anita Park on July 11th, 2021, the 2nd fastest of 18 works at that distance.

RED KING's most recent start, the G3 San Juan Capistrano at Santa Anita Park, is shown below:
