Spendthrift Farm LLC and MyRaceHorse Stable's TIZAMAGICIAN dueled briefly with CUPID'S CLAWS in deep stretch before ultimately kicking clear, earning his second graded stakes victory in Sunday's $100K Cougar II Stakes (G3) at Del Mar.

The 4-year-old son of TIZNOW continues to thrive at twelve furlongs— improving his record to 2 wins and 2 seconds from 4 tries at that distance.

"He broke well today. The thing with him is to get him to relax." said winning jockey Flavien Prat. "He did that pretty well. At the three-eights, I began to ride him and he responded. It's always good to win a race for Mr. Mandella. That's special. He was the man that brought me over here (from France) and it's good when I can win one for him."

Sent off at odds of 1-5, and ridden by Flavien Prat, TIZAMAGICIAN broke alertly and was hustled to the front to join HEYWOODS BEACH, who set early fractions of 25.88 and 50.04. TIZAMAGICIAN continued to press the issue, while galloping smoothly around the first bend and into the back stretch.

They ran three quarters in 1:14.79 and the mile in 1:40.67. When they quickened at the final turn, it was TIZAMAGICIAN and CUPID'S CLAWS the only ones going on with it. They matched strides briefly but in the end, TIZAMAGICIAN proved much too classy, edging clear and striding away late to cross the line first. CUPID'S CLAWS had to settle for second, HEYWOOD BEACH saved third. The final time for the twelve furlongs was 2:31.45.

TIZAMAGICIAN paid $2.60 to win, $2.20 to place, and $2.10 to show. He is by TIZNOW out of MAGIC UNION by DIXIE UNION. He earned his second graded stakes victory, pushed his earnings to $427,851 and achieved a new top speed figure for the effort.

"He likes to run all day." winning trainer Richard Mandella said. "I think Flavien (Prat) even had trouble pulling him up after all that. He's figuring things out and he really likes the long distance. He's improving my training. We'll size it up (regarding next race) there may be one down here and there's a really nice marathon during the Breeders' Cup. That's what we're really looking for."
