"Hollywood" Hay's Handicap
Race Scenario: Smooth Like Strait and Award
Winner will go for the lead. United will stay close to the leaders and close in
the stretch. Closing Say the Word will close from deep. I think Going Global
#6 – Smooth Like Strait is doing very well with her career
finishing 80% of the time in the money, winning 47% of his starts – She has
raced two times at Del Mar winning one and running a second only losing by a
#2 - United likes the distance finishing in the money 100%
of time, winning 100% of those entries. He has a great Trainer /Jockey
combination (Richard Mandella – Flavian Prat).
#5 – Award Winner has won two races in a row and is going
for a hat trick. She has the Highest last race speed rating in the race. She
likes the distance and turf.
#3 - Say the Word will be closing from deep to try and win.
The added distance should help.
Race Scenario: Jazz Hands will go for the
lead. R M C Hook'em stay close to the leaders and close in the stretch. Joe Don
Looney and Clem Labine will close from deep, and I think Clem Labine will be
#6 – Clem Labine is coming in from northern California where
he had a successful campaign at Pleasanton– There is plenty of speed in the
race which I think will set it up for his running style of coming from behind.
#7 – Jazz Hands has finished in the money 100% of time this
year, winning 50% of those starts. He has won 50% of his career starts and has
the highest average of money won per start of all the starters today.
#3 – Joe Don Looney is having a good year winning two out of
six starts finishing 83% of the time in the money.
#1 – R M C Hook'em has finished in the money 70% during his
career, winning 40%. He only needs repeat his last win at Pleasanton.
Race Scenario: Equilove and Karakatsie will go
for the lead. Going Global and Jibber Jabber will stay close to the leaders and
close in the stretch. Closing Remarks and Madone will close from deep. I think
Going Global will win.
#2 – Going Global has the best Breyer number in the race and
is four for four wins since coming to the USA and I see no reason she can't be
five for five.
#9 – Madone has the highest per race earnings in the race.
She loves the distance two out of two starts and has the same record at Del
#12 – Closing Remarks has finished in the money the last
four races, running third in her last race despite clipping heals. She should
stay close to the leaders and close at the end.
#7 – Jibber Jabber is climbing the class ladder but is in
good form right now. She is very competitive, and I think she will get into the

RACE SUMMARY: The #5 Award Winner and #6
Smooth Like Straight will go for the lead. Both can sit off the lead as well
especially #6 Smooth Like Straight. #2 United will be sitting right behind
#6 Smooth Like Straight – His Beyer figure has gone up his
last 6 races. If his Beyer goes up this race it will be greater than 102. Has
won 3 of those 6 races with the 3 loses coming by a neck or head. He has run
three straight grade 1 races.
#2 United- Reigning champion of this race. He should get a
really nice trip here. I'm concerned about the last race where he didn't fire
at all. There was some foot issue which is all good now and he's been working
out really well.
#3 Say the Word- Should close into the exotics here. He has
been running really well lately finishing second to my top 2 choices in 2 of
the last 3 races. The one in the middle he won.
$4 PK 3 2,6/ 1,3,6,7/2
$2 Tri 6/2,3/2,3
$14 win #6
RACE SUMMARY: A ton of speed in here I could
see as many as 5 horses try for the lead or at least be really close to the
pace. #2 Push to Start might be the fastest horse and also has jockey Jessica
Pyfer who loves to get her horse out to the lead. Trevor will also get the #5
First Prez out of the gate quickly and close to the lead. There will be a few
more which is why I like the #6 Clem Labine to close and win this race.
#6 Clem Labine – Will get plenty of pace to run at. He has
done well finishing in the exacta in 7 of 11 starts on a fast dirt track. 2
starts back had an 84 beyer which is the highest in the field in any of their
#3 Joe Don Looney- This horse has speed but can come from
the back as well which will be great here. He has been in the exacta in 4 of
his 6 races on a fast dirt track.
#1 R M C Hook'em- He's another one that should be able to
sit off the leaders and come late. Only ran once on fast dirt track and that
was last race at Pleasanton that resulted in a victory.
$20 win #6
$1 EXB 1,3,6
RACE SUMMARY: I see a few horses who could get
the lead and for that you will probably get a fast pace. The #1 Pizzazz might
be the one to get the lead out of the gate but #2 Going Global not only is the
best horse in the field will also get theperfect trip and win.
#2 Going Global- Has been unbeaten since coming over from
Ireland. Is the class of the field by far and should also get a nice set up to
win pretty easily. Her beyer has gotten better every race as well and those
numbers are way better than anyone else in this field.
#12 Closing Remarks - Finished 2nd to Going Global 2 and 3
races back both by less then a length. Always seems to find trouble and still
run good. Last three races from most recent clipped heels, stumbled start, and
brushed. Has been working out very well during this 2 and half month break.
#9 Madone- 4 for 6 life 2 for 2 at Del Mar and has beaten
some of these horses already. All 4 wins came from this distance. Should get a
nice pace to run at.

22 to 1 Tom's Tips
Two horses here appear to be the speed of the race with 2
others who could be up front too. But I believe that Award Winner and Smooth
Like Strait will be the 2 to go. The balance of the field will look to tuck in
get cover and follow the others around. Midway on the backstretch, we will see
Say the Word and Vintage Print move forward with United and Restrainedvengence
getting going to the leaders. Entering the turn, our leader Smooth Like Strait
continues with Award Winner and Restrainedvengence giving way. Count Again will
be last. Who will finish best?
2 – United –mainly run-in distance races over the 10 plus
starts. He's last race, he was asked to go and didn't. He will be near the
pace. His work of :58.4 handily shows me he's fit now can he do enough? Coming
off a layoff, that last work means to me he's ready. I think he can win.
3 – Say the Word – was gaining late in the Shoemaker Mile
last out on Smooth Like Strait. He finished second. He worked once on the turf
at Del Mar and ok works prior. The layoff doesn't bother me, but he also has
been running in longer races.
6 – Smooth Like Strait – he will try and make all the
running but has others that will be also wanting the front. He won last time
out at the 1 mile in grade 1 and held off the others. Rispoli Umberto is guided
with horse in the past 6 races with 3 wins and 2 seconds and 1 third (the
saddle slipped in that race). He proved that 1 mile is good for him and now is
he a true miler? Maybe.
Push to Start goes to the lead but there will be others
looking to get a good start to move to the front. There are 6 horses that will
want to go or find position with Clem Labine and Hammering Lemon trailing. From
that point, I really don't know what's going to happen but here are my choices.
2 – Push to Start – a shipper (taking advantage of the ship
in and win program) and start he's career at Laurel then racing on the turf at
Pimlico. I am tossing the turf races out. Now facing Cal-Breds for the first
time, he appears to have both speed and a class edge in this race and the
trainer is using Jessica Pyfer to ride receiving the 5-pound apprentice
allowance. With a speed horse getting weight off only helps. A good work at Del
Mar of 1:00 flat says to me he's going to win.
8 – Hammering Lemon – ok, you may now ask yourself why pick
a horse that raced only once on the dirt and did nothing. He has raced on the
turf 10 times. Ok, he was claimed 2 starts back, ran over his head last out.
Average works on the dirt but he's by Square Eddie and he's one of the top
sires in California for both turf and dirt. The turf side in with the Irish
bred dam. He's dropping to a level he will have a chance and the trainers
record of second off the claim makes me take notice. 6 runners, 3 winners with
a positive ROI. Watch the odds on this one.
1 – R M C Hook'em – very good last at Pleasanton with a win
at 25k open company. He was pushed hard to win. He's been running and winning 3
times on the all-weather. He wants to sit behind the leaders and when ask to
go, he does. Another one going against Cal-Breds for the first time. In form,
shipped in to have a chance for a piece.
Equilove and Freedom Flyer will try and make all the running
with Pizzazz and Jibber Jabber move forward too. Going Global, Closing Remarks
and Jibber Jabber at the back with the rest of the field moving around after
the break. No changes on the backstretch as the pretenders back off the closer
begin to move forward. As they hit the top of the stretch, Freedom Flyer and
Pizzazz are going the wrong way as the horse traffic stops a few and the
outside runners are on the move. Now, looking into the handicapping crystal
ball I see...
6 – Equilove – made all the running in a lesser race last
out with a win. The inside position allowed her to hold off the contenders. The
race before was a higher value purse and she lost all chances at the start. Her
2 1-mile races in Ireland were good efforts in handicaps but she shipped over
to win her first race at Santa Anita. Big class jump here but if she can
maintain the front, hold off the challengers, she wins.
2 – Going Global – has won 5 races in a row at the graded
stakes level. She will be moving late but will have to overcome the inside post
position in the early part of the race. I think Flavien Prat will let the
others go and he will shuffle back to make the run on the outside. She's the
favorite at a short price.
9 – Madone – not much in last race but a grade 3 winner at 1
mile and has run 5 times at the distance with 4 wins. She will be moving late
but I think she maybe closer up than her other races. Her big move will have to
be at the top of the stretch to catch the front runner to have a chance. Last
race too far for her and she was out classed in the Breeder's Cup. Could be the
winner with the right trip.
