A talented group of fillies will line up for Saturday's $500K Test Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. It's a seven furlong race over the main track, restricted to three-year-old fillies, scheduled for a Post Time of 4:34 PM ET. Here is the full field:
SOUPER SENSATIONAL: 6-1
ALWAYS CARINA: 3-1
MAKE MISCHIEF: 12-1
SEARCH RESULTS: 5-2
BELLA SOFIA: 6-1
Wow, what a line up. The longest odds of the field come by two fillies at 12-1. Our morning-line favorite, the talented and accomplished SEARCH RESULTS is just 5-2. Let's look at the competitors horse by horse.
First of all, SEARCH RESULTS from the seven hole is our 5-2 morning-line favorite for trainer Chad Brown and hardly needs an introduction. She's won 3 of 4 races. Her runner-up finish to MALATHAAT in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and subsequent score in the Acorn (G1) makes her a dominant force to contend with. Irad Ortiz Jr. is reunited with his filly, after his injury prevented him from riding her last time out.
BELLA SOFIA breaks from the outside post at 6-1 and is very intriguing. She'll represent the Rudy Rodriguez stable and get jockey Luis Saez back onboard. On paper, she touts impressive figures. In her last race, she looked phenomenal decimating rivals in a six furlong Allowance 92k race at Belmont. One race before that, in the Jersey Girl Stakes, she beat out for second place the talented MISS BRAZIL. Nevertheless, she indeed will be tested here.
ALWAYS CARINA, the second choice at 3-1, comes off a nose-loss to ZAAJEL in the Mother Goose (G2) while the $0.80-to-win favorite that day. In her defense, it was her first start without Lasix. Now she'll cut back in distance for her second try without Lasix. Flavien Prat returns to ride.
Does OBLIGATORY have all the trappings of a favorite-upsetter in this spot? She exits a runner-up effort to SEARCH RESULTS in the Acorn (G1) last time out. She was not helped by fairly-easy fractions that day, yet circled the field and closed furiously. If they go too fast early on, watch out for this gray daughter of CURLIN to come thundering down the stretch. Her Grade 2 win came at this seven-furlong distance. Regular rider Jose Ortiz returns for the ride.
SOUPER SENSATIONAL earned her first Grade 3 victory last time out in the Victory Ride (G3). She loses jockey Flavien Prat to ALWAYS CARINA, but the beautiful daughter of Curlin gets Ricardo Santana Jr. on the saddle. She's pegged 6-1 on the morning-line for trainer Mark Casse.
ILLUMINATION ships in from the West Coast for trainer Bob Baffert and is 12-1 on the morning-line. John Velazquez will ride this $900k-purchased daughter of MEDAGLIA D'ORO for the first time. She blew away maidens last time out, which was her first start in six months. She is sharp and ready to roll for her second try off the layoff. Note she's recorded four bullet works since her last win.
ZAAJEL from post position three gets plenty more respect by the odds-maker this time. She's 8-1 on the morning-line for trainer Todd Pletcher and has Joel Rosario back on the saddle. She's 2-for-2 at this seven furlong distance.
MAKE MISCHIEF is Mark Casse's second entrant and has odds of 12-1 on the morning-line. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione returns to ride her. This INTO MISCHIEF filly has had trouble leaving the gate in her last two starts, but still finished with gusto both times. Two starts back in the Acorn (G1), she brushed the gate yet was only beaten by SEARCH RESULTS and OBLIGATORY by 1.5 lengths. One start back in the Mother Goose (G2) she stumbled at the start yet finished just 2.5 lengths behind ZAAJEL and ALWAYS CARINA. MAKE MISCHIEF has proven she can run with this group and if she takes a step forward, she can steal the race.
