Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen tied the title of winningest Thoroughbred trainer, held by the late Dale Baird, with his 9,445th win when the colt SHANGHAI'S DREAM crossed the finish line in the sixth race at Ellis Park yesterday. However, Asmussen teams across the country celebrated this historic moment in horse racing.
Asmussen watched the simulcast of the Ellis Park race from Saratoga, surrounded by media and family. The colt rallied from last with Rafael Bejarano aboard, beating the 43-1 longshot ORIENT MAGIC by three-quarters of a length. Earlier in the day, Asmussen also won at Saratoga with JALEN JOURNEY, who romped by 8 ½ lengths in the fourth.
Today, Asmussen has two running at Louisiana Downs, three at Monmouth, five at Ellis Park and five at Saratoga. ARCHIDUST is the second-choice at Ellis Park's $100K Kentucky Downs TVG Preview Turf Sprint and STILLCHARGINGMARIA in the $100K Kentucky Downs TVG Dueling Grounds Oaks. He has a third entry at Ellis running on the undercard. On Sunday, HENLEY'S JOY is running in the $125K Kentucky Downs TVG Preview Turf Cup.
One of the six running at Saratoga is Kentucky Derby contender and Arkansas Derby winner, SILVER STATE. SILVER STATE will be running in the $1 Million Whitney Stakes (G1). However, based on post times, one of his maidens or claimers are most likely to push Asmussen across the line to winningest trainer.
