One of the many great things about horse racing is all the different types of bets you can make. It's up to you how much you want to risk and what kind of bet you want to place. I used to do a lot of win and exacta bets with the occasional trifecta. That would change to some Pick 3's and eventually some Pick 4's as well. One thing about being a good horseplayer is being able to change. I was very intrigued when I came across a different bet and strategy.
Meet Joseph Curatola, now 60 years old, who has been around the game for a while and has adjusted to make it more profitable for him. Joe and his dad owned several trotters at Monticello in the late 70's. Joseph also worked as a betting teller in an OTB (Off Track Betting) for 11 ½ years in Manhattan, and in 1987 at Pompano Park. I came across Joseph on The Live and Breath Horse Racing Facebook group and became interested in his betting strategy. I reached out to him and this is what he had to say:
"I come from the best neighborhood in the world (little Italy) downtown Manhattan. Famous for gangsters, mobsters, gamblers and some legit workers .I started hanging in an OTB at the age of 13 making sneaky bets. I loved it. I learned quickly that there was a lot to learn about this sport. As time went on I started hanging around older people going to the racetrack Aqueduct, Belmont, Meadowlands, Roosevelt, Yonkers, and Monticello. All while gaining knowledge from old timers. This is where I get my name Joey Parlay."

He continued: "I had gotten beat so many times at the wire. My exactas would finish first and third. I said there has to be something better, ah yes, a place parlay. Simply pick a horse in multiple races that you think is capable of winning. Could be 2-5 races. You just let the money ride on each one. By this method I have had countless $1k days. Yes you lose, but for every one you win you gain money to play 10-30 more times."
"How do I pick these horses you say? My method is relying on video replays. I watched how a horse ran and asked, did he finish with interest? Was he bothered? Did he get out of the gate well? Who was riding him? Is there a big jockey change? Does he need more distance or less distance? How does the horse look and when was his last race? There are a lot of factors. I watch so many replays, not just one. I have horses saved in my stable that should run better next time out. There are so many strategies. Just find one and go with it."
One thing as a bettor is a new strategy and plan gives you a new hope that you can become more successful betting. I asked Joseph, do you actually make a profit with this bet or is it just a better bet where you lose less than before? (While asking this question I thought there is no way he makes a profit with this. Well I was wrong.)
"I do make a profit."
— J. Curatola
"I do make a profit. I've hit really big so when I win, I can play 10-30 times more without putting any more money on. When I hit over a certain amount, I take out immediately. The biggest hit on my par was $16k. I nearly caught one the other day for over $20k. In the last 6 months I'm ahead. My account was over $50k. Then of course there are other bets, but my parlays are usually good. Even if I only hit once a week, I'm still ahead. I do a little better on the weekends. I may hit 2 or 3 .It's patience and picking good races."
I don't know about you but I'm ready to give a place parlay a try. We thank Joseph for his time and sharing his story and betting strategy. Have you ever tried a place parlay or something similar? How did it work out for you? Email me at [email protected] with your story.
