A seven-horse spill occured on the seventh race on Sunday, August 22nd at Del Mar. Fortunately neither of the horses involved were seriously injured. But there are two jockeys facing suspension: Jose Valdivia Jr. and Diego Herrera.
Valdivia's agent, Nick Hines, told Daily Racing Form that he plans to appeal the suspension. Valdivia faces a 10-day penalty while Diego Herrera, a 5-day. The announcement came Thursday from the Del Mar Board of Stewards.
As for the race itself, it was declared to be a no contest and was suspended.
Valdivia was aboard KATIE'S PARADISE and the penalty comes from allegedly "crossing over without sufficient clearance entering the far turn and causing interference, resulting in an accident."
Herrera, who was aboard SASSY CHASEY, caught his penalty for allegedly "allowing his mount to remain in tight quarters entering the far turn and causing interference resulting in an accident."
Valdivia's suspension is scheduled for September 18th, which could run through the conclusion of the Del Mar meet and into the Los Alamitos schedule, which runs from September 10-26. These dates supension dates could change or be wiped out, obviously, based on the results of Valdivia's appeal.
Herrera's suspension is scheduled from September 2 to 6.
