FRANCATELLI'S victory in the $100,000 Rumson Stakes at Monmouth Park yesterday was not without a challenge.
At the start of the five-furlong sprint, FRANCATELLI was hounded early and held off threats from both sides coming out of the final turn. He held on gamely to win by a neck over QUICk tempo.
SAGAMORE MISCHIEF pressed through but finished 1 ¼ lengths back in third.
"He's pretty quick from the gate for such a big horse. He gets away from there almost like a quarter horse. He has run in some very fast races against some very fast horses and he always gives his best effort. He's as good on the turf as he is on the dirt. Just a game horse. He fights every race for us," said trainer Cal Lynch, who owns FRANCATELLI in partnership with Maribeth Sanford.
FRANCATELLI is a four-year-old gelding son of CITY ZIP out of SALARY DRIVE by MIZZEN MAST. He now has a record of 6-4-1 from 13 starts. He now holds lifetime earnings of $330,999.
