Tide of the Sea Wins $100,000 Japan Turf Cup

Laurel Parks' Fall Festival of Racing kicked off on September 10th and has featured stakes racing every weekend since. This past weekend, Laurel Park hosted five $100,000 stakes races. 

TIDE OF THE SEA ran away with the $100,000 Japan Turf Cup. The five-year-old gelding owned by Three Diamond's Farm, has been winless since January 23rd when he won the W.L. McKnight (G3). He ended his drought yesterday turninmg back HIERARCHY to capture the Japan Turf Cup by 1 3/4 lengths. 

The 1 1/2 mile Japan Turf Cup is for 3-year-olds and up. TIDE OF THE SEA was favored at 6-5 over six rivals and paid $4.60. He hit the wire in 2:28.19 over a firm turf course with jockey Horacio Karamanos aboard for trainer Mike Maker. 

"My trainer told me to go on the lead. Send him out of the gate and try to take the lead. I tried to go in front but I couldn't. [A THREAD OF BLUE] went next to me and [REAL FACTOR], so I didn't want to rush the whole time," Karamanos said. "I let my horse go wherever he was comfortable."

A THREAD OF BLUE won the Palm Beach (G3) and Saratoga Derby Invitational in 2019. He wsa heager for the lead and held it through the quarter mile in 23.81 seconds. He was tracked by the 45-1 longshot REAL FACTOR, who took over the lead at the half. TIDE OF THE SEA was unhurried in third but began to inch up to the leaders, running the mile in 1:37.58 to take the lead and the win. HIERARCHY took second be 1 1/4 lengths with GUNNISON following in third.
