XY Speed Victorious in $100K Laurel Dash

XY SPEED, claimed for $32,000 in his last start drove between horses to win the $100,000 Laurel Dash Saturday in the Fall Festival of Racing. The 5-year-old gelding is a son of FIRST SAMURAI and owned by Winning Stables, Inc. The Gerald Bennett trained horse covered the 5 1/2 furlong course in 1:02.45. He improved his record to seven wins of nine starts over the distance on the turf. 

Ridden by Jorge Ruiz, XY SPEED race off the pace of FRANCATELLI. FRANCATELLI posted fractions of :21.95 and :44.75, pressed by VALUED NOTION. Running between horses around the turn and inthe stretch, XY SPEED drove to the front an eigth of a mile from the finish with enough left in the tank to hold off BATTLE STATION. 

"When he made the lead, I knew he was a fighter just off of his form," said Bennett. "He came out of the race good when we claimed him, so we took our best shot. You can't win them you're not in them. You can't be afraid to run them."
