Peter M. Brant's BLOWOUT secured the lead with jockey Flavien Prat aboard, and never looked back for the entire mile, running gamely in deep stretch to hold off stablemate REGAL GLORY in Saturday's $400K Win and You're In First Lady Stakes (G1) at Keeneland.
In victory, the 5-year-old star mare captured her first Grade 1 win and secured her spot for next month's Breeder' Cup Mile on November 6th at Del Mar.
"I thought I was kind of the only speed in the race," winning jockey Flavien Prat said. "As always she showed a lot of early speed. I was able to get out and relax down the backside and get a nice breather. Turning for home I didn't know what to expect. I felt those horses coming at me. She actually lost the lead for a little bit, but she got really brave, dug in and got the job done." (Ron Flatter, HRN)
Sent off at odds of 9-2, BLOWOUT broke beautifully for Prat and cleared the lead before the first turn and grew it to a three length advantage racing into the backstretch. The opening quarters went in 23.76 and 47.75. Stablemate REGAL GLORY was positioned mid-pack, while even-money favored ALTHIQUA was covered up, racing along the rail toward the rear of the field.
Turning for home, BLOWOUT's lead diminishes to half a length as stablemate REGAL GLORY with Jose Ortiz aboard, ranged up with a full head of steam. ALTHIQUA is caught in traffic trouble, the Aiden O'Brien trainee EMPRESS JOSEPHINE is getting going late.
But in deep stretch it's a two-horse race between BLOWOUT and REGAL GLORY; they dash for home together, necks apart, with BLOWOUT ultimately digging deeper and repelling her stablemate to win by half a length at the wire. EMPRESS JOSEPHINE ran strongly on the outside to finish third. The final time for the one mile on a turf listed as Good was 1:34.86.
BLOWOUT paid $12.60 to win, $6.40 to place, and $4.80 to show. She is by DANSILI out of BEAUTY PARLOUR by DEEP IMPACT. She improves her record to 14: 5-7-1, runs her second-highest speed figure, while pushing her earnings to $988,600.
Winning trainer Chad Brown enjoys the 1-2 exacta as he also saddled the runner-up, REGAL GLORY. Jockey Flavien Prat gets his first First Lady (G1) title.
"I think it's probably the best (division) in the country right now," Prat said. "What she did was pretty amazing."
