Those who followed the 2020 Breeders' Cup closely recognized, after the highly touted PRINCESS NOOR finished 5th in the Juvenile Fillies, that there was one less horse in the ranks of undefeated Thoroughbreds. Indeed, after the Breeders' Cup, 2020's list of unbeaten Thoroughbreds listed only six horses.
Highest on the list, the only horse with four wins, was HAPPY SAVER, trained by Todd Pletcher. HAPPY SAVER is a three-year-old colt by SUPER SAVER out of HAPPY WEEK. A distance runner, most recently, on October 10 with Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons, he won the Jockey Club Gold Cup GI at 1-1/4 miles, whipping MYSTIC GUIDE and the heavily favored TACITUS for good measure.
With three wins, including the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, is STRUCTOR. Trainer Chad Brown prepped the colt to victory in the one-mile grass race finishing ahead of BILLY BATTS and GEAR JOCKEY in an impressive 1:35.11. Though still listed as active, STRUCTOR did not race in 2020. Through his three races in 2019, he acquired lifetime earnings of $709,500. After throat surgery, the colt sat out 2020 to look forward to racing again after a full recovery.
Also with three wins is MAXFIELD, a three-year-old colt trained by Brendan P. Walsh. The horse had two starts and wins as a two-year-old and one start and win in 2020. On May 23, he swept to victory in the GIII Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs, followed by NY TRAFFIC and PNEUMATIC. On June 10, 2020, while training, the colt suffered a non-displaced condylar fracture, resulting in immediate surgery. Racehorses can come back from such injuries, though recovery time is lengthy and some horses with this issue do not return to the track.
The breathtaking AUNT PEARL, trained by Brad Cox, is also on this list. Those who watched the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf saw the Irish filly, ridden by Florent Geroux, soar to her third win in a row with a wire-to-wire victory, followed by two other Irish breds: MOTHER EARTH and MISS AMULET.
Another Brad Cox undefeated pony, also a Breeders' Cup champion, is ESSENTIAL QUALITY. The two-year-old colt won the Juvenile on November 6 with Luis Saez in the irons. He bested HOT ROD CHARLIE and KEEPMEINMIND with prohibitive favorite JACKIE'S WARRIOR finishing 4th.
Last among the undefeated of 2020 is the Steve Asmussen trained NASHVILLE. A three-year-old speed horse, the colt has specialized in dirt races of around six-furlongs, coming away with three straight wins. He is listed as a probable starter for the GI Malibu Stakes to be held the day after Christmas at Santa Anita.
