Sunday at Aqueduct featured stakes racing highlighted with the New York Stallion Series stakes including the $100,000 NYSSS Thunder Rumble and the NYSSS Staten Island.

funny guyFUNNY GUY went head to head with MY BOY TATE in the Thunder Rumble. The 21-1 longshot BINKSTER led the field to set the pace while FUNNY GUY held back in fourth. Around the far turn, Rosario tipped him five wide as they approached the quarter pole. MY BOY TATE took the lead at the top of the stretch, but FUNNY GUY found a new gear and rand him down in the last few strides to take the win by a neck. The final time in the seven-furlong race was 1:23.57. MY BOY TATE took second followed by BANKIT. 

The race was the fifth stakes win for FUNNY GUY and his first trip to the winner's circle since July 30th. FUNNY GUY is a son of the 2008 Kentucky Derby winner BIG BROWN out of a DISTORTED HUMOR mare. 

The Staten Island is a race for New York-sired fillies and mares, three years old and up. SADIE LADY led the field to set the pace with opening fractions of :23.76 and :47.43. ESPRESSO SHOT tracked in second under jockey John Velazquez. By the quarter pole, the pair were matching stride for stride before ESPRESSO SHOT took command as they came out of the turn. Straightening for home, the filly made her move fending of PRAIRIE FIRE on the outside hitting the wire in 1:24.64. 

This was the third stakes win for the filly and her first since March 2019. Three of four of her wins have come at Aqueduct and she improved her career earnings to $402,105. PRAIRIE FIRE finished 2 ½ lengths back with BANKERS DAUGHTER in third.
