MALATHAAT became a third generation Demoiselle winner yesterday at Aqueduct. The two-year-old filly by CURLIN and out of DREAMING OF JULIA kept the family tradition alive when she notched her first graded win. DREAMING OF JULIA and her dam, DREAM RUSH, were both winners of the Demoiselle at Aqueduct in their racing days.
MALATHAAT is now on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks as the 1 ? mile Demoiselle is a qualifying race awarding 10-4-2-1 points based on finish. The filly is fresh off a win on November 6th in the Tempted Stakes going a mile, also at Aqueduct. She broke her maiden at Belmont going seven furlongs on October 9th.
In the Demoiselle, TRAFFIC LANE set the pace with fractions of :23.69 and :48.50. MILLEFEUILLE took over at the three quarter mark and MALATHAAT tracked in fourth. According to trainer Todd Pletcher, she wasn't happy on the inside. At the ¾ mark, MALIBU CURL sat in third a length behind TRAFFIC LANE.
At the top of the stretch, MALATHAAT went five wide at the quarter pole and straightened away digging in down the stretch to take the win. MILLEFEUILLE went three wide but didn't have the speed to catch up and settled for the place. MALIBU CURL weakened down the stretch and finished third.
MALATHAAT was ridden by jockey Johnny Velazquez. She is owned by Shadwell Stables. It was also a great day for her sire, CURLIN, who sired the top three finishers in the race. MALATHAAT was purchased for $1.05 million by Shadwell at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She improved earnings to $172,150 and is currently 3-for-3.
