Apprentice jockey Victor Flores was breezing a horse yesterday, Dec. 9, for trainer Matt Shirer when the filly bolted to the outside and unseated the jockey near other horses that were jogging in the opposite direction causing a head-on collision.

"That's where he got stepped on or something by one of the other horses," Shirer stated. The filly he was riding was uninjured.

Flores was riding regularly at Monmouth Park over the summer and fall. He then picked up a few mounts in Kentucky and then came to Louisiana. "He's a nice kid. I was trying to help him out, put him on a couple of horses. Then something like that happens. It's unfortunate," said Shirer.

Flores' former agent, Rudy Rodriguez Jr., set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the injured rider.
