TAX has only had three starts this year. The first was a disappointing ninth place finish in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes back in January at Gulfstream. The second was a fifth in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2). After nearly eight months off, he came back to Gulfstream to show he's still got it.

TAX broke quickly under Luis Saez and went to the lead, setting fractions of :23.87 and :46.96. Maintaining a half length advantage over ROYAL URN and TATWEEJ, he lengthened the lead to another length and a half down the stretch with little urging from his jockey.

"We were just saving him for nex time," Saez said, "I could feel that we were going fast."

They weren't just going fast, they were going fast enough that they nearly set a track record. TAX just missed SOCIAL INCLUSION'S 2014 track record of 1:40.97 by less than a fifth of a second. TAX finished the 1 1/16 mile race in 1:41.15. EYE OF A JEDI finished second four and a half lengths back followed by PHAT MAN. EYE OF A JEDI was a 10-1 longshot for the day that rallied to finish just a half length ahead of PHAT MAN, who was a slight favorite over TAX. MATH WIZARD settled for fourth.

With his victory, TAX could be eyeing another shot at the Pegasus World Cup on January 23rd. His previous stakes wins include the G3 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct and the G2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga.

TAX is the only stakes winner from his dam, TOLL by GIANT'S CAUSEWAY. He is the son of ARCH. TAX is owned by R. A. Hill Stable, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Hugh Lynch. Trained by Danny Gargan.
