The Grade 3 $100,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream is going to have some star factor as FIRENZE FIRE, MIND CONTROL, and DIAMOND OOPS headline Saturday's race. The field of 12 sprinters will line up for the seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up.
FIRENZE FIRE skipped the Cigar Mile at rainy Aqueduct for sunny Florida. He finished third at the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) in November rallying from 11th. Irad Ortiz Jr. will be in the irons for trainer Kelly Breen.
MIND CONTROL also skipped the slop in the Cigar Mile. He is winless in five starts after a disappointing ninth in the Lafayette on the Breeders' Cup undercard. He started the year out great, but then with COVID hit and he ran into some bad circumstances at Aqueduct, Monmouth, and Keeneland that just didn't fit his running style. Johnny V will be back in the saddle.
DIAMOND OOPS is coming into the race off a sixth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. He won last year's Mr. Prospector and had two back-to-back G2 wins. He also finished fourth in last year's Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1). Julien Leparoux will have the ride.
In addition to this trio of sprinters, SLEEPY EYES TODD is fresh off a win in the Lafayette Stakes on the Breeders' Cup undercard. TRUE TIMBER, winner of the Cigar Mile, was second. Tyler Gaffalione will have the ride for the first time.
COOL ARROW, an INTO MISCHIEF son, will be looking for his fifth win in eight starts at Gulfstream. He will also be stepping back up into the stakes game. His 2-year-old campaign was strong with several wins in various listed stakes including the Springboard Mile in 2016. However, he has fallen down into the allowance claiming class for several of his last starts. The Mr. Prospector is his chance to step back up for another G3 win after taking the Smile Sprint Stakes back in September. This colt seems to really be at home on the Gulfstream track.
