As two-year-olds become three-year-olds today, the Grade 1 $150,000 Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct marks their first chance of the year to earn points towards a start in the Kentucky Derby. There have been several notable winners emerge from the race including the 2000 Kentucky Derby FUSAICHI PEGASUS, FIRENZE FIRE and MIND CONTROL.
Today, a field of five will enter the starting gates to start their path towards the Derby in the 1 mile Jerome.
SWILL (PP: 2 M/L: 7/2) is the current favorite after finishing fourth in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes and breaking his maiden impressively in a mile at Churchill Downs. He's also trained by Brad Cox. He's already gone the distance and won as well. SWILL is the only horse in the field to already have a point towards the Derby in May.
EAGLE ORB (PP: 4 M/L: 9/5) is a talented New York-bred who won the six furlong Notebook Stakes. He has already faced one other horse in the field today as well, HOLD THE SALSA, and unfortunately lost that race by seven lengths going seven furlongs. This will be EAGLE ORB's first race in open company and it's not clear if he can make the mile distance.
HOLD THE SALSA (PP: 3 M/L: 4-1) is also a New York-bred who is coming into the race fresh off a nice win in the $250,000 Stallion Series stakes. However, his one shot in open company was a flop in the Saratoga Special Stakes.
ORIGINAL (PP: 5 M/L: 7/2) is one to watch. Despite a very rough loss in his debut, he went on to have a nice gate to wire performance in his second start. However, that was on the grass and today's race is on the dirt.
CAPO KANE (PP: 1 M/L: 12-1) is the longshot for the day. He has two starts and is coming off his maiden win at Parx. However, since the Derby is running Lasix free this year and the NYRA has implemented Lasix-free on race day rules starting today, the Jerome is his first Lasix-free start.
Post time is 3:50pm EST for the Jerome Stakes. Road to the Kentucky Derby points will be awarded and divided by 10-4-2-1 respectively to the first through fourth finishers.
