Yesterday was a sun shining day for the winners of the Sunshine Millions at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. Here are the results from the Championship Meet.
$75,000 Sunshine Millions Turf
PROVEN STRATEGIES broke on top setting a quick pace with fractions of :22.65, :45.85, and 1:09.83. VENEZUELAN HUG, the 5-2 favorite with Luis Saez aboard, rated in fifth. Moving four-wide as they entered the stretch, they powered past the leaders to take the win. The final time for the 1 1/16 mile race was 1:40.02.
The 4-year-old colt is by CONSTITUTION, winner of the Florida Derby (G1). This made his fifth win in nine starts. He won the Sunshine Turf Preview on November 21st at Gulfstream West. He was claimed for $40,000 by trainer Danny Gargan. He is owned by Spedale Family Racing LLC and R.A. Hill Stable.
$75,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf
SUGAR FIX went to the front to set the pace with fractions of :24.19, :48.20, and 1:12.10, pressed by MO OF THE WEST. BIENVILLE STREET rated in fourth. Turning for home, BIENVILLE STREET went three wide and took aim at the wire, managing to pass the leaders by a length with a final time of 1:41.50.
BIENVILLE STREET is a 6-year-old mare by STREET BOSS. It was the mare's fifth win in 32 starts and the second consecutive win since sporting blinkers. She is trained by the 1985 Kentucky Derby winner and trainer of SPEND A BUCK, Cam Gambolati.
$75,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint
CAJUN BROTHER rallied for the 14-1 upset in the Sunshine Millions Sprint, knocking the 3-2 favorite, EXTRAVAGANT KID down to second place. Stalking in fourth behind him, the 8-year-old gelding pulled away by a neck with a final time of 1:10.97 in the six-furlong race. EXTRAVAGANT KID finished 1 ¼ lengths ahead of WITH VERVE, who finished third.
CAJUN BROTHER is by CAJUN BREEZE and owned by Shadybrook Farm. He is trained by Michael Yates. It was a good start to 2021 for the gelding, whose 2020 season featured 4 wins and a third from eight starts.
$75,000 Sunshine Millions Classic
LAST JUDGEMENT went to the front and didn't look back. He went to the front setting fractions of :23.84, :47.57, and 1:12.07 with Jose Ortiz aboard. NOBLE DRAMA, the favorite, trailed the field. While he made a big move on the turn, NOBLE DRAMA just couldn't make it to the front and LASY JUDGEMENT was able to easily move away from the field to win by 6 ½ lengths with a final time of 1:49.76. NOBLE DRAMA held on for second, a neck ahead of ROMAN EMPIRE.
LAST JUDGEMENT is a 5-year-old son of CONGRATS and was recently claimed by Michael Dubb, Steve Hornstock, Bethlehem Stables, and Nice Guys Stables. He is trained by Mike Maker whose last start was an eighth-place finish in the Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3) on December 19th. He was a $62,500 claim at Belmont Park on October 25th.
