Sunday at Aqueduct featured the $100K Busanda Stakes won by THE GRASS IS BLUE, ridden by Manuel Franco, for trainer Chad Brown and owner Louis Lazzinnaro LLC.
THE GRASS IS BLUE was much closer to the pace than usual, racing in third just three lengths off leader TRAFFIC LANE, who set early fractions of 24.44, 49.73 going 1 ? miles on dirt. By the turn for home, THE GRASS IS BLUE improved to second but was momentarily blocked, allowing COFFEE BAR to race up along side of her and take the lead. But once clear THE GRASS IS BLUE kicked in, reeled in her foe, and went on to win by a length. COFFEE BAR, though outkicked, ran well to finish second with DIAMOND ORE getting up for third.
The final time was 1:54.90. THE GRASS IS BLUE paid $5.50 to win, $2.90 to place, $2.10 to show. This was THE GRASS IS BLUE'S first stakes win and earned her 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks.
