The winner of last Saturday's $100K Ladies' Turf Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park was LADY'S ISLAND, ridden by Emisael Jamarillo, trained by Georgina Baxter, owned by Matties Racing Stable LLC and Averill Racing LLC.
At 7-years-old, still a model of consistency, LADY'S ISLAND has won for the 18th time in 35 starts. She's pushed her lifetime earnings to $665,575.
Due to the rain, this turf sprint was moved to the main track, which was listed as sloppy. Six fillies and mares lined up at the gate to dash five furlongs. LADY'S ISLAND broke sharp and was hustled to the front. HEAR MY PRAYER ran up to challenge her, with the rest of the field stringing out as they ran through opening fractions of 22.20, 45.43. LADY'S ISLAND slipped away from her presser, and carried her speed strongly with three furlongs to go. MISS ARAMET made a four-wide move to challenge as they got to the stretch but could not catch the leader. LADY'S ISLAND would run on and prevail to win by three parts of a length. MISS AURAMET secured second, with HEAR MY PRAYER half a length back in third. The final time was 58.87 over the slop.
LADY'S ISLAND paid $4.40 to win, $3.20 to place, and $2.20 to show.
She is the daughter of GREATNESS out of a BROAD BRUSH mare BROADWAY MARTHA.
