Louisiana's best will run tomorrow on a race card at Delta Downs that features 10 stakes races for Louisiana-bred horses only and all on the dirt. The combined purse is worth $800,000. First post time is at 12:55pm CST. This is the richest race program of the season and will take place for the first time during the day.
The feature of the day will be the $125,000 Louisiana Premier Day Championship for older horses running at 1 1/16 miles. This will be the ninth race and has attracted several runners including last year's winner UNDERPRESSURE. The 7-year-old gelding is the top earner in the field with lifetime earnings of $763,182 from 39 starts. Also starting is POUND FOR POUND and GRAND LUWEGEE. POUND FOR POUND and UNDERPRESSURE recently battled it out in an allowance race at Fair Grounds, where he beat UNDERPRESSURE by a nose. GRAND LUWEGEE won the Championship in 2019.
The $100,000 Louisiana Day Premier Sprint is the sixth race and NO PAROLE will be making his second Delta Downs appearance. The 4-year-old is a Grade 1 winner and won last year's Prince before he went to Belmont to take the Woody Stephens Stakes (G1).
The $100,000 Louisiana Premier Day Starlet will feature a 3-year-old daughter of CALIFORNIA CHROME. CILLA recently finished third in the Frizette Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park.
For the $40,000 Bon Temps Starter, the field features two entries by Karl Broberg, the first being a contender in several stakes races in his early racing years. ANDTHEBANDPLAYEDON is a 6-year-old by STAR GUITAR and is coupled with stablemate GRILLIN.
For the $50,000 Starter Stakes, KRIS T. (6/5) is the current favorite and is on a four win streak for trainer Juan Larossa. NANA'S JOY at 5-1 has three wins and two seconds in her last five starts at Delta for Karl Broberg.
In the $40,000 Ragin Cajun Starter Stakes, MAN CAMP (7/2) has two wins and two thirds in his last four starts at Delta for trainer Isai Gonzalez. While ALLURING ACTOR, trained by Sarah Delaney, is going off at 5/2 and has two wins and a second in his last three starts at Delta.
In the $100,000 Prince Stakes, the heavy favorite at 9/5 is JIMMY TWO TIMES. The gelding last won the Louisiana Futurity at Fair Grounds on December 31st. The 3-year-old is lightly raced but has three wins from five starts and earnings of $111,240 for trainer Keith Bourgeois. Also in the field is STANDING PERFECT (3-1), who is one for one this year with a win in the January 11th Louisiana Legacy Stakes at Delta and a second place finish last December in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes at Fair Grounds. Both our sons of HALF OURS.
The $100,000 Louisiana Premier Day Distaff is a large field of 10 with two also eligibles. The current favorite is SAINTS N MUSKETS for trainer Allen Landry. The 6-year-old mare is coming off two black type wins in the Magnolia Stakes and the Lookout Stakes, both at Delta Downs. Last year, she was second in the Louisiana Legends Mademoiselle Stakes at Evangeline, but had a disappointing seventh place finish in the Louisiana Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Stakes. She will face the winner of that race, SNOWBALL, again. However, SNOWBALL'S recent finishes including an 8th in the Nelson J. Menard Memorial Stakes (January 9th) and a fifth in the Louisiana Champions Day Ladies Sprint Stakes (December 12th), both at Fair Grounds.
The $100,000 Matron Stakes has MR. AL'S GAL at 7/5. The mare is no stranger to Louisiana-bred stakes races and is coming off an allowance optional claiming win at Fair Grounds in January and a second place finish in the Louisiana Champions Day Ladies Sprint Stakes in December. She also finished second at Pimlico in The Very One Stakes (October 2020). She will face her Ladies Sprint Stakes rival in OUR LOST LOVE. This mare won the Ladies Sprint Stakes in December but most recently placed fifth in the Orleans Stakes at Delta in January.
The final race of the day is the $50,000 Gentleman Starter. The favorite here is another Broberg STAR GUITAR gelding in GUITARZAN (5/2). The gelding has a good streak of second places at Delta Downs, but a tenth place finish most recently in a starter optional claiming. At 2-1 is MUCH CLASS for trainer Ron Faucheaux. He has two firsts and a fourth in his last three starts at Delta.
And finally, for Louisiana Premier Day, Delta Downs is offering the DRF Bets $50,000 Guaranteed All Stakes Pick 4 wager. This special wager is for races 7-10 and includes the $125,000 Championship. Track announcer Don Stevens will also have a special guest with him, Martha Claussen, as a co-host for the simulcast show and trackside reporter following the major stakes races.
