Don't forget to tune in to Fair Grounds Racing this Saturday, February 13th for a great, competitive day of racing. You'll catch six stakes races of over $1.25 million in purse money, plus an important KY Derby prep: the Risen Star Stakes. More on that below.
For the bettors, don't forget to play the $400,000 Est. All Stakes Pick 5, which starts on Race 9, post time 4:12 ET. And the $750,000 Est. All Stakes Pick 4, which starts on Race 10, with post time 4:44 PM ET.
But first let's have a look at the graded stakes action!
Race 10 is the $200K Mineshaft Stakes (G3) — a one mile and one sixteenth event on the dirt for four year olds and upward. We shall witness the return of MAXFIELD for trainer Brendan Walsh. He was last seen almost two months ago winning the Tenacious Stakes. But it's a welcome party for WELL'S BAYOU all the same, for trainer Brad Cox. He is making his second start off a long layoff, back in May. Post time is 4:44 PM ET.
Race 11 is the $150K Fair Grounds Stakes (G3) — a one mile and one eighth race over the turf, four year olds and upward. Eleven of them will line up with the favorite FACTOR THIS (3-1) for Brad Cox. He finished eighth in both his last two starts but he'll try to turn it around against a competitive field. Post time is 5:16 PM ET.
Race 12 is the $300K Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G3) — a one mile and one sixteenth race on dirt for fillies of three years. The top two favorites are TRAVEL COLUMN (2-1) for Brad Cox and CLAIRIERE (5-2) for trainer Steve Asmussen. They were last seen duking it out in the Golden Rod Stakes where CLARIERE got the jump on TRAVEL COLUMN who was in traffic in the stretch drive. But impressively, TRAVEL COLUMN swung wide late and ran her down for the win. They'll square off again! Post time is 5:47 PM ET.
Race 13 is the $400K Risen Star Stakes (G2) — a one mile and one eighth race on the dirt for three year olds. This is a prep for the Kentucky Derby and the winner will be awarded 10 points to his name. Thirteen horses will line up with the favorite KEEPMEINMIND at 3-1. It's an immensely competitive field. The top three finishers of the Lecomte Stakes make their appearance: MIDNIGHT BOURBON (6-1), PROXY (8-1), MANDALOUN (9-2) and SENOR BUSCADOR (6-1). Don't forget to give SANTA CRUISER a good look, for he broke badly in the Lecomte and his chances were arguably compromised. Post time is 6:18 PM ET.
There are still two more stakes races in the card, earlier than these main graded ones.
Race 7 is the $100K Colonel Power Stakes — a five and half furlong dash on the turf for four year olds and upward. The favorite is the veteran EXTRAVAGANT KID for Brendan Walsh at 5-2. He comes off two second place efforts at Gulfstream but will try to run back to his form in last year's Breeder's Cup Turf Sprint, where he finished a solid fourth and earned a 116 Equibase Figure, which stands tall in this field.
And Race 9 is the $100K Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes — a one mile and one sixteenth race on the turf for fillies and mares, four years and upward. Twelve horses are entered with the favorite being SECRET MESSAGE (5-2) for Brad Cox. She lost to the second favorite DALIKA (7-2) who is trained by Albert M. Stall Jr., on this very track, two races back in the Blushing K.D. Stakes. But she's back in form, having won her last race, a stakes on this track: the Marie G. Krantz Memorial. Post time is 4:12 PM ET.
Race 9-11 starts the $400,000 Est. All Stakes Pick 5
Race 10-12 starts the $750,000 Est. All Stakes Pick 4
