It's been quite awhile since MAXFIELD first splashed into the scene. He looked like a star breaking his maiden followed by a stellar Breeder's Futurity victory last Fall. That was 17 months ago, yet he's raced only twice since then.
MAXFIELD has been hampered by injuries. He had an ankle chip that required surgery, forcing him to miss the 2019 Breeder's Cup Juvenile where he would have been one of the favorites. Then he returned in 2020 to win the Matt Winn Stakes in good fashion — but suffered a non-displaced colyndar fracture on his next workout. This too required surgery, forcing him to miss the 2020 Kentucky Derby which ran in September. But, Goldolphin remained optimistic.
Brendan Walsh and the connections picked their spots and patience paid off. They pointed MAXFIELD to run in the Tenacious Stakes back in December, and he scored a dominant win, keeping his 4-4 record intact. He earned a 103 Equibase Figure for that effort. Unbeaten and untested — just how good is he?
He was allowed two weeks from working out after that score, but then came right back to train for this race, the Mineshaft Stakes.
The Mineshaft Stakes is a Grade 3 event at Fair Grounds Race Course. It is run at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt and the post time is 5:44 PM ET.
MAXFIELD put in four consecutive weekly works over the FairGrounds track. He is ready to go.
Rounding out the field are: WELL'S BAYOU, SONNEMAN, BLACKBERRY WINE, CHESS CHIEF, ENFORCEABLE, and DINAR.
