When LOVELY FINISH crossed the wire Saturday at Los Alamitos Race Track, her victory went deeper than what any statsheet could record. On paper she broke her maiden by 3 ½ lengths in a 1,000 yard race. In inspiration and wonder, her win was a celebration of life and resilience. It was a salute to her rescuer-trainer-owner's brave efforts, for saving his precious mare from the wildfire that occured on Dec 7th 2017.

This was her first win in eight starts. After the race, Herrick commented how he needed to keep himself from getting emotional, noting how they almost lost their lives together. That she was perfect tonight, that this win was special.

They've certainly come a long way. Both Herrick and LOVELY FINISH required months to recover from the wildfire. Herrick resumed her training and conditioning, and the result was a success. What's all the more wonderful is the gray mare is in great form and improving. LOVELY FINISH, though winning only for the first time, has never been off the board in all eight starts.

Her overall record is one win, four seconds, and three thirds. Herrick commented how LOVELY FINISH never had a bad race, how important it is that he gives his horses time to recover, and how it was good for her to get the job done that day.

LOVEY FINISH is by MARINO MARINI out of CORAZON DE LEO by FLAME THROWER. Jockey Aaron Gryder piloted her for the win.

Herrick also added how LOVELY FINISH could get finicky waiting in the gate, so he spent time schooling her in the mornings at San Luis Rey Downs. He said they will see what they can do with her next.
