Some of the fastest turf sprinters will be on display Wednesday February 24th, 2021 at Tampa Bay Downs.
The two stakes races at hand are both run at five furlongs, which mean wicked opening quarters, pressing half miles, and flying finishes! Let us have a look at the sprint showdown.
The $100K Turf Dash Stakes is a five furlong sprint on the turf for four-year-olds and upward. A large field of 11 horses are entered for the race, headed by 8-5 favorite IMPRIMIS for trainer Joseph F. Orseno. He will be ridden by jockey Antonio A. Gallardo and break from post position two.
IMPRIMIS is such a talented horse that he was once favored to win the BC Turf Sprint. Yet he's never won a grade one race. The odd thing is, he has frequently drawn post position two or three, which has been his undoing due to his running style. He often finds himself boxed in with traffic trouble. Well, he drew post two again. But if IMPRIMIS gets a clean trip, he's as good as any grade 1 Turf sprinter in America. He is fast enough to run this field down, but note this is his first time on the Tampa Bay grass.
The second favorite is TURNED ASIDE for trainer Mark E. Casse. He was last seen winning the Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship back in November, which was run at six furlongs. He entered the stretch that race under handride by jockey Jose Lezcano! He'll be ridden this time by Jose C. Ferrer. TURNED ASIDE has been primarily racing at six furlongs but he'll shorten to five for this event. He cannot be ignored due to the monster figure he earned in his most recent start: a 113 Equibase Figure.
Rounding out the field are: OCEANIC, QUARKY, CRITICAL WAY, THE CONNECTOR, ARCADIA CALLS, TENCH, FOX ROX, JAZZY TIMES and MY BOY LENNY(AE)
This event comes as Race 7 on the Tampa Bay card.
Post Time is 3:21 PM ET.
Next up, the lady sprinters compete in the $100K Lightning City Stakes.
They dash five furlongs on the turf. A full field of 14 are set to go. It's a wide open race with the favorite at odds of only 3-1: THE GODDESS LYSSA for trainer Gerald Bennet. She ran her highest speed figure in last month's Minaret Stakes over this Tampa Bay turf. She's strung together 5 wins from 7 starts. She has not run this short but she's on the top of her game.
MISS AURAMET is the second favorite at 4-1 for trainer Edward Plesa Jr. She's done most of her racing at Gulfstream Park and makes her first start at Tampa Bay. Coming off two losses she is trying to find her way back to the winner circle. She won six times last year, but is winless in her two starts of 2021.
The rest of the field are: THE GREAT KATH, ROYAL COLLECTION, WEEKEND FUN, PAYNTDEMBLUESAWAY, SETHAMEE STREET, AWSUM ROAR, JEANIE B, LENZIE'S LUCKY LADY, BLUEFIELD, ODE TO JOY, ROMAN D'ORO (AE), and NIGHTLIFE (AE).
This comes as Race 9 of the card. Post Time is 4:21 PM ET.
