While the major Triple Crown action has split off this weekend to Oaklawn Park, Gulfstream Park and Turfway Park, let's not forget the 3-year-old turf division taking shape out in the west.

The $100K Pasadena Stakes is a one-mile turf race at Santa Anita, restricted to three-year-olds scheduled for Saturday at 4:26 PM PT.

We have an invader. Red Flag hops off the Kentucky Derby trail to try his heels on the grass once more. He registered a win over this course, surface and distance back when he broke his maiden back in September 2020.

At one point, RED FLAG looked like a promising Kentucky Derby candidate. He won the $100K Bob Hope Stakes (G3) by more than seven lengths, beating a talented Derby prospect in SPIELBERG while at it. Then RED FLAG ran in the $200K Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) but suffered a troubled trip. He had to "check" halfway through the race. He got shuffled back, lost interest, finished on the wrong lead, and failed to hit the board. Well, that was two months ago. He's aiming for redemption.

RED FLAG is the son of TAMARKUZ out of SURRENDER by STORMY ATLANTIC. The Pasadena's one mile distance suits his endurance; his sire won the Breeder's Cup Dirt Mile. RED FLAG is the third betting choice at 3-1. He gets a new rider in Ricky Gonzales, who takes over from Victor Espinoza.

There are two favorites ahead of RED FLAG in the morning line. They are CATHKIN PEAK and ROCK YOUR WORLD.

Here's the field:

CATHKIN PEAK is the top choice at 8-5 for trainer Philip d'Amato. CATHKIN PEAK was last seen on Dec. 27th winning the Eddie Loegan Stakes, which is contested at one mile on the turf, same as the Pasadena Stakes.

In the Eddie Loegan, CATHKIN PEAK broke a bit slow, moved up to rate in mid-pack, then unleashed his rally through the stretch. He won by a comfortable length and registered a 97 Equibase Figure, which is just one point below RED FLAG's highest figure of 98.

Moreover, that was only CATHKIN PEAK's second start; he has more experience to win with for his third. Please note, a horse CATHKIN PEAK defeated in the Eddie Logan Stakes, BIG FISH, came back to win the Cal Cup Derby.

ROCK YOUR WORLD is the second betting choice at 2-1 for trainer John Sadler. ROCK YOUR WORLD won his debut race at the $61K MSW level, earning a 94 Equibase Figure for it. Based on that figure, he is competitive with the two horses we've discussed.

With original rider Joel Rosario out of town for the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park, ROCK YOUR WORLD will be ridden by Umberto Rispoli.

Rounding out the field are: MAC DADDY TOO, COMMANDER KHAI, and HARLAN ESTATE.

Post Time is 4:26 PM PT.
