Her career has not been without a bit of controversy, but today she was clearly the victor in the Derby City Distaff Stakes (G1). The champion sprinting filly went to the front and never looked back, holding off a challenge from SCONSIN to win the 35th running of the $500,000 Derby City Distaff presented by Kendall-Jackson Winery (G1) by 1 ½ lengths. The win earned trainer Bob Baffert his record 220th Grade 1 victory.
"I didn't know I was that close to the record until a month ago. To do it here on this big day is very special. I'm just happy for GAMINE. She got the job done. I told Johnny that this was the first time she's run before a crowd. She was looking around. So many things can go wrong but once I saw her down the backside, I knew we were in the clear," said Baffert.
The filly was ridden by John Velazquez and covered the seven furlongs on a fast track in 1:21.50. Baffert has won this race twice with MIDNIGHT LUCKY in 2014 and PUSSYCAT Doll in 2006. This was Johnny V's first first Derby City Distaff win.
"She didn't get to the break I hoped for but she bounced back really quickly and ran really easy in the early going. She showed what a champion she was and I was very proud of my filly," said Johnny V.
GAMINE is the 4-year-old daughter of INTO MISCHIEF out of PEGGY JANE by KAFWAIN. She improved her record to 7 wins out of 8 starts with lifetime earnings of $1,286,500.
