After four consecutive 2nd-place finishes, BLOWOUT made the grade in Saturday's $500K Churchill Downs Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (G2).
BLOWOUT cleared the lead under Flavien Prat, opening up by as much as eight lengths early on, then dug deep enough in the stretch to hold off the late closers and bring home the win.
"She was running so easy up front and I thought the times were not that fast, so I was very happy," said Prat.
"Then when we came to the eighth pole, they all came after me, and it looked like they might go by. But when she saw them, she regrouped and fired up again, and we won it."
NEW YORK GIRL ran second, ZOFELLE ran third. The final time for one mile on turf was 1:36.30.
BLOWOUT paid $5.80 to win, $3.60 to place, and $2.80 to show. She is by DANSILI out of BEAUTY PARLOR by DEEP IMPACT. She now pushes her earnings to $718,600. The winning trainer was Chad Brown, the winning owner, Peter M. Brant.
Chad Brown commented after the race, praising Flavien Prat for doing an excellent job settling her down, recalling that she can be a little difficult to handle. Brown stated he thought the field was going to close in again, and that she was going to wait for horses, but thankfully she kicked in once more after hearing the horses behind her.
