Our Radar Horses often consist of hard knocking horses that routinely race on a local circuit and THUNDER DOME is no exception. This particular horse on our radar this week is definitely one worth taking a look at. The seven year old chestnut gelding is nearing war horse status with a lifetime 43 starts and a record of 11-13-9 with total earnings of $672,440.
The gelding is trained by Bart Hone and owned by W.D. and M.H. Carson and Leach Racing LLC. THUNDER DOME is entered in tomorrow's Jack Cole Stakes at Sunray Park in New Mexico. The race is for three year olds and older, New Mexico bred and is run at a 6 ½ furlongs for a purse of $50,000.
The gelding is a distance specialist with a 43% win rate in seven starts this year with one second and one third. His most recent workout was at Turf Paradise on April 14th running five furlongs in 1:00.20 handily. He is a multiple stakes winner having recently won the Rocky Gulch New Mexico Classic Cup Championship Stakes at Zia Park last November and the O.D. McDonald Stakes at Albuquerque last September. In the O.D. McDonald Stakes he finished 2 ¼ lengths ahead of HE'S ANOTHER WHO and tied the track record for the distance of seven furlongs.
His spring starts have primarily been allowance optional claiming races, in which he has a third, fifth and second place finish. However, his last race at Turf Paradise on April 21st he finished second and earned a 102 Equibase speed rating, a significant improvement over the 78 he earned in his fifth place finish on March 24th.
In the Jack Cole Stakes, he is facing five other entries whom he has seen in the past. One of those being STRAWBERRY WHISKY. However, his last race was back in December in which he placed first in an allowance at Zia Park with a 72 Equibase rating. He also finished 10th in the New Mexico Classic Cup Championship Stakes at Zia Park behind THUNDER DOME.
