The $100K Fran's Valentine Stakes at Santa Anita Park was won by LEGGS GALORE, ridden by Ricardo Gonzalez, trained by Philip D'Amato, owned by William Sims — in a gate to wire victory, kicking home powerfully to repel WARREN'S SHOWTIME in deep stretch.
The Gray filly broke well under Ricardo Gonzalez and headed straight to the lead to set early fractions of 23:00 and 46.77. She was permitted a comfortable two length advantage through the backside, with $0.70 to win favorite WARREN'S SHOWTIME reserved toward the back, just three lengths from the lead.
With three furlongs to go, LEGGS GALORE kicks on for home, maintaining her lead avantage while WARREN'S SHOWTIME is cut loose to produce her rally. But LEGGS GALORE quickens with her foe and holds her at bay, matching strides before pulling away to score by three-quarters of a length. WARREN'S SHOWTIME settled for second, PULPIT RIDER was another two lengths back in third. The final time for the one mile on turf was 1:34.85.
LEGGS GALORE paid $6.00 to win, $2.60 to place, and $1.00 to show. She is by BAYERN out of CASHING TICKETS by INDIAN CHARLIE. She has now won six of her last seven starts, and pushes her earnings to $322,708 for the effort.
"The main thing was to get her to relax," jockey Ricardo Gonzalez said. "Her speed is her main weapon and she got it done. When that other filly came to her, I was loaded."
"I thought Ricky won it on the first turn when he got the quarter in 23 and did it comfortably," trainer Phil D'Amato said.
