Friday's Black-Eyed Susan undercard is part of this week's recap. We had five stakes races leading up to the feature race. Here's the rundown.
The $150K Allaire DuPont Distaff Match Series Stakes (G3) was won by SPICE IS NICE, ridden by John Velazquez, trained by Todd Pletcher, owned by Lawana L. and Robert E. Low — in a stretch battle.
SPICE IS NICE tracked frontrunner DREAMALILDREAMOFU through opening quarters of 23.54 and 47.62 before seizing command at the top of stretch, engaging in a duel with the resurgent pacesetter but pulling away late to win by a length and a half. GETRIDOFWHATAILESU rallied for third. The final time was for the one mile and one-eighth on the dirt was 1:48.71.
SPICE IS NICE paid $6.60 to win, $4.00 to place, and $3.00 to show. She is by CURLIN out of DAME DOROTHY by BERNARDINI. She earned her second consecutive victory, pushed her earnings to $247,028, and achieved her highest speed figure for the effort.
The $100 Very One Stakes was won by CARAVEL, ridden by Florent Geroux, trained and owned by Elizabeth Merryman — in a three-way blanket finish.
CARAVEL steadied repeatedly and was forced to wait for an opening on the rail. She found daylight and burst through late, getting the bob in her favor over two other horses that were noses apart. The photo revealed GOTTA GO MO finished second, VICTORY KINGDOM third. The final time for the five furlongs on turf was :56.21.
CARAVEL paid $6.60 to win, $4.40 to place, and $3.00 to show. She is by MIZZEN MAST out of ZEEZEE ZOOMZOOM by CONGRATS. She improves her record to 5 wins, 2 thirds from 7 total starts. She tied her highest speed figure to date while pushing her earnings to $212,872 in the process.
The $150K Miss Preakness Stakes (G3) was won by RED GHOST, trained by Wesley Ward, owned by Douglas Sharbauer — in a resilient score.
RED GHOST secured the lead and set fractions of 22.88 and 45.80 before behind headed by an onslaught of challengers. She was not to be denied and reclaimed the lead at the stretch to outfinish her foes by the wire. EUPHORIC was a nose back in second, JOYFUL CADENCE a head back in third. The final time for the six furlongs on dirt was 1:10.53.

The $100K Hill Top Stakes was won by ALDA, ridden by John Velazquez, trained by Graham Motion, owned by Wertheimer and Frere — in game victory.
ALDA took a stalking trip along the rail before making her move into the stretch, seizing command and holding off the late charge of SEASONS, who finished second. ARM CANDY was a nose back in third. The final time for the one mile on turf was 1:35.06.

LAST JUDGEMENT cleared the lead and set a tempo of 23.83 and 47.70. He was permitted a relaxed trip through the backside, which left him with plenty of run turning for home, able to turn away the late charges by MODERNIST, who finished second, and FEARLESS, who was a neck back in third.
