The ladies are taking center stage at Churchill Downs this Saturday. We've got the following two stakes races to look out for: The Winning Colors Stakes and the Keertana Overnight Stakes. Let's have a closer look:
The $150K Winning Colors Stakes (G3) — 6 Furlongs, Dirt, Fillies and Mares, Four-years-old and upward. Post Time is 7:57 PM ET.
FRANK'S ROCKETTE looms large in this field for trainer Bill Mott. Her top ESF numbers exceed 110, which could win any of the last five runnings of this event. She's a dual-Grade 2 winning daughter by INTO MISCHIEF and enters off a second-place finish in the Carousel Stakes. Yes, she was the beaten favorite, but it was her first start off a layoff so we can expect a better run here. She's back at Churchill Downs where she's a perfect 2 for 2. Jockey Florent Geroux is back for the task.
SCONSIN will break from post position four for trainer Gregory Foley. The daughter of INCLUDE made a bold run at GAMINE last time out in the Derby City Distaff, which was an extremely tough task considering GAMINE had the lead all to herself that day.
SCONSIN figures to have a decent pace to run at in this spot, given the two likely speedsters lining up alongside her. Note that she's got two wins at Churchill Downs, as Martin Garcia climbs onboard for the first time.
BAYERNESS is an interesting contender from the Cherie DeVaux barn. The daughter of BAYERN has hit the board 3 of 4 times at this Churchill Downs track. Her last win was at Churchill Downs in an Optional Claiming 62K race against elders. She'll have to improve to be competitive with the top two. Consider this: if we take into account the last five runnings of the Winning Colors Stakes, it requires a 102 ESF on average to come out victorious. BAYERNESS can very well reach that number. She earned a solid 100 ESF last time out in her comeback race. In preparation for this race, she delivered a sharp 4F workout on May 15th, going 4F in 48.2 as the 12th fastest of 88 workouts at that distance.
Rounding out the field are: RISING SEAS, TIPSY GAL, and HEADLAND.
The $110K Keertana Overnight Stakes — 1 mile 1/2, Turf, Fillies and Mares, Four-years-old and upward. Post Time is 10:11 PM ET.
DELTA'S KINGDOM breaks from post eight for trainer Bill Mott. She seeks to benefit from the drop in company. The daughter of ANIMAL KINGDOM was last seen running second in the Bewitched Stakes (G3) at Keeneland last month. She's looking for her first win at this twelve furlong distance, though she has not failed to hit the board in all three times she's tried. Florent Geroux regains the mount.
DALIKA is an interesting player from the outside post, ten. She'll represent the Albert M Stall Jr. barn as she seeks her third win at Churchill in what will be just her fifth start. The daughter of PASTORIUS will also be dropping in class with regular Miguel Mena to pilot her.
PASS THE PLATE breaks from post position five for trainer J Paul McGee. The late-running filly by Temple City chased tougher foes in her last two starts and finished a respectable third in the Bewitched Stakes (G3). She's got a win over this Churchill Downs surface, but still has to contend with the above two competitors who beat her in the past. According to credible paper, PASS THE PLATE's running style as a closer puts her at an advantage here. Jockey Rafael Bejarano is back onboard.
Rounding out the field are: NAOMI BROADWAY, FIRST COURSE, YA BEAUTY, TEMPLE CITY TERROR, TWEETY SHOW, SURSUM CORDA and CAMBELIZA.
