In this edition of our Belmont Stakes Profile, we look at the Peter Miller trainee, GET HER NUMBER, a Grade 1 winner who skipped the Kentucky Derby and Preakness to train up to the Belmont. He's a lightly raced colt, with just two wins from five starts, and earnings of over $275,667. When he enters the starting gate on June 5th, 2021, he'll aim to give Peter Miller his first Belmont Stakes victory in his first attempt.
GET HER NUMBER delivered a solid effort in the Arkansas Derby (G1) last time out, when he finished fourth to SUPER STOCK. He was gaining ground on the winner, even though the Peter Miller trainee had a troubled trip in the early stages of the race. He was bounced around entering the first turn, then had to take up in order to avoid clipping heels, causing him to veer outward which lost him even more ground. It was a rough start to what was supposed to be a productive prep-race. Yet the resilient colt fought hard all the way through the stretch. The replay is shown below.
There's much to be inspired from this effort. First of all, he ran well for a 24-1 shot regardless if he did not hit the board. He was gaining ground on the winner, and with a cleaner trip he could have been closer in the final order of finish. Moreover, he earned his highest speed figure to date off this effort. See in the video how he displayed a good turn of foot when they reached the turn, soon as his pilot pushed the button.
On paper, GET HER NUMBER has improved his speed figures with each and every start, dating back to his Maiden Special Weight victory at Del Mar back in August 2020. On Belmont Stakes day, he'll be making his third start off a layoff, which could have him much sharper and ready to go. He has the versatility to be up close to the pace, or, to lay back and let the pace develop in front of him, and then launch his late rally. His two best races so far have come under stalking trips.
From a pedigree standpoint, we notice that GET HER NUMBER's sire, DIALED IN, did not compete in the Belmont Stakes, despite running in the first two legs of the Triple Crown. He did not compete in the last half of his three-year-old season either. But a positive point to consider is that GET YOUR NUMBER has the lineage suited to endure longer races. He's got the influences of G1 router MINESHAFT and the 1992 Belmont Stakes G1 winner A.P. INDY up his sireline.
GET HER NUMBER will undoubtedly have to step up to be competitive here against likes of ESSENTIAL QUALITY and HOT ROD CHARLIE, both of whom finished well ahead of SUPER STOCK in the Kentucky Derby. SUPER STOCK is our link to get a hint of the class differences between GET HER NUMBER and the horses he's yet to face.
GET HER NUMBER deserves a considerable look. The fact that he faced adversity in a top level race, yet didn't throw in the towel but instead kept on trucking, makes him an attractive long shot. What's more is he's only had three races on dirt and getting better with every race. And let's not forget: with his win in the American Pharoah Stakes (G1), he touts a victory over our recent Preakness Stakes Champion, ROMBAUR. The replay is shown below.
In training up for the Belmont Stakes, GET HER NUMBER recently worked at the San Luis Rey Training Center on May 14th, going 5F in 1:03.00 as the second fastest of 2 works at that distance.
