Formerly known as "Fairmount Park", the new FanDuel Sportsbook & Horse Racing will bring the $250K St. Louis Derby back on the track on August 28, 2021.
We have to go back to 2006 to recall G1-Champion LAWYER RON taking the inaugural running of the event, which is restricted to three-years-old only, and run at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt.
The revival of St. Louis Derby comes as part of track General Manager Melissa Helton's primary goal of getting the purses bigger for the horseman, with the long-range target of establishing casinos. With the establishment of eventual "Racinos", would come an increase of racing days. Helton targets Racino opening by Quarter 4 of 2022.
"It's been a year in the making since I've been here. That was my No. 1 goal, to get us up and running, and here we are," Helton said. "I was lucky enough to find some that have the horse racing experience, too, that worked at a track and at a casino. That's been the biggest goal, to get those people here so we can take off running as a whole team." (SportsHandle)
