The Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2) 2 fillies Five furlongs
Wesley Ward has the favorite here but with 22 starters, let's see if what I can find.
15 - Nymphadora – lost her first start, she dwelt at the starting gate, got going and closed to the leaders and then went backwards. Second start, winning result with on the pace running and finished off very nicely. If she runs this last race, she has a great chance here. She will be close to the leaders.
22 - Yet – a very tough race first out, bumped at the start and won anyways. This was on the all-weather in Ireland. The horse that ran second is running here too Orinoco River. High rating for this horse. Top trainer here.
1 - Artos – this horse is trained by George Arnold and has 2 races, one at Keeneland finishing second in nice run on the dirt and then a winning run at Churchill on the turf at 5 ½ furlongs winning by a neck. He's by Kodiac and the dam Shimmering Moment was a winner at distance so is this really too short for her? She cost $85k and will like the firm going. I find it very interesting that Frankie Dettori has chosen to ride her. Odds of 8-1 or a little less maybe.
19 - Twilight Gleaming – Wesley Ward trainee. First start was at Keeneland on the dirt with a good second to a horse who bred for dirt. She was slow way from the gate, came to the leaders while racing wide. She needed that race. The next race on turf at Belmont, she led from start to finish and was asked for more in the final quarter and finished with plenty left. She the favorite here but maybe 5-2 odds?
The Queen's Vase (Group 2) 3-year old's One mile & six furlongs
This is a tough race to pick. I won't be surprised if we get something with a big price. Well, here goes.
15 - Zinc White – not much as a 2-year-old but 2 wins from 2 starts as a 3-year-old against short fields. His ranking has continued to rise and this maybe the breakthrough spot for the horse. Ralph Beckett is better with younger horses (2- and 3-year old's). With 3-year-old turf horses this year, he has sent out 31 horses 11 are winners at a strike rate of 24%.
14 - Wordsworth – this son of Galileo has won only his maiden (it took 2 tries) and finished second in his last start. Racing in Ireland only, he's put up 3 good efforts and will be on the pace. He's last effort, he made the lead and got caught. Breeding indicates that distance isn't an issue, and he is full brother to Kew Gardens who won at distances of 1m to 1 ¼ in group 1 company. Ryan Moore has the mount. There is a chance that he will be scratched from this race and go in the King Edward VII instead.
6 - Kemari – 2 runs in maidens so far with a first and second. Both races were at a distance of ground. His breed for distance and the dam who won at 1 ½ miles and ran in even farther races and placing in those. In his winning effort, he was eased before the wire. This is a Godolphin horse, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick.
The Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) 4+ fillies & mares One mile
Fillies and mares going a straight mile. 13 runners possible.
6 - Double Or Bubble – has 4 runs with 3 wins and 1 second against lesser company. The runs have been at 6 and 7 furlongs include one win at Ascot over good ground. The is a huge step-up and running at a mile for the first time. By her breeding, the dam's offspring have won at distance greater than a mile. The trainer Chris Wall has had a good run in the last 14 days with 12 starters and 4 winners. Good odds on her if she up for the challenge.
2 - Lady Bowthorpe – ran a very strong race last out against Palace Pier. Previous start, the won by a head over Queen Power. She won at Ascot before, and the distance suits her. My main issue with her is how much did that last race take out of her? She was all out to catch one of the top milers in the world.
8 - Indie Angel – here's the team of Frankie Dettori and John Gosden with a useful runner. She's only run at 7 furlongs or 1 mile and has done well at lower levels. She's won on both all-weather and turf and used at group 2 race as a prep for this race, she lost to Lady Bowthorpe. She appears to be well placed for a good effort and get some black type on her cv.
The Prince of Wales's Stakes (Group 1) 4+ One mile & two furlongs (1 1/8)
With only 7 runners in this group 1, we have some of the top horses running and looking for bigger things later in the season.
7 - Love – is very hard for me to pass on Love. She's run great races and has handled layoffs without issue. She's racing with top company at group 1 level and winning. She is primed for a good effort here and looking toward the Arc in October (maybe Breeder's Cup?).
6 - Audarya – won the Breeder's Cup last time out over Rushing Fall. She has won in England, France, and the US. She is a slow developing mare who may have found her best running's at 4 years old and now at 5, she could be even better? I think this is a horse who wants a firm surface for her best effort. My concern is the break from the Breeder's Cup to now running against some of the best.
1 - Armory – an Aiden O'Brien trainee who have now find his best racing at 4. He was useful at 3 but came out to win at first asking over 3 horses at Chester in a group 2 race. He tracked the leaders and then pulled out to past then and finish very strongly. He has the advantage of having a race this year over my top 2 but will have to step his game to beat them. Maybe?
