Last weekend June 12th Woodbine finally got to kick off their 2021 meet. The 2020 meet was cut short and the 2021meet was delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions. This weekend they kick off their stakes season as they have a big Grade 3 race the Whimsical Stakes.

Typically the Whimsical Stakes is run in the middle of April but right like last year due to Covid-19 it will be run the third week of June. This race is open to fillies and mares aged four and up. It is run at 6 furlongs with a purse of $115,500. Let's breakdown this race by post position and see if we can come up with a winner.

#1 Amalfi Coast – Justin Stein gets the call for the 5th straight time to be aboard the Kevin Attard trainee. She finished behind 3 horses that are in this race last time out in the Grade 2 Bessarabian Stakes. He was the 3/1 second choice. He never really fired as he got in tight around the turn. She has never run at the distance of this race 6 furlongs. ML is 4/1

#2 Chart - Jerome Lermyte will be aboard Chart who is one of two horses entered for trainer Mark Casse in this race. This horse has never faced this level of competition and is up against it here. She is 1 for 1 at Woodbine and has a win and a second in 2 starts at this distance. ML is 20-1

#3 Summer Sunday – Gary Boulanger will be aboard replacing the injured Rafael Hernandez who is Summer Sunday's normal rider. Summer Sunday  is Canada's 2019 female champion sprinter. She has won 8 of 12 races at Woodbine also 2 of 5 at this distance. She is the oldest horse in this race as well at 6 years old. Likes to get out front from the start and that's the only way she has ever won. ML is 4-1

#4 Sav- Keveh Nicholls will ride Sav for the first time for trainer Ricky Griffith.  Will be up against it here facing much tougher competition then ever before. She does like Woodbine finishing in the exacta 9 of 12 races. Ml is 20-1

#5 Golden Ami - Daisuke Fukumoto will be this horse's 4thdifferent jockey in 4 starts. Trained by Josie Carrol Golden Ami will be facing her toughest competitors to date. She seems to need the front and that will be an issue in this race with other much speedier horses in this race.

#6 Our Secret Agent - Emma-Jayne Wilson gets the call for the other Mark Casse trainee in this race. She finished 3rd in the Bessarabian Stakes which is the common race for half this field. She leaped up at the start of the race and then stayed around mid pack all race before finishing 3rd of the 7 runners. Our Secret Agent was wide throughout that race.  She likes Woodbine finishing in the exacta in 4 of 5 starts. ML is 10/1

#7 Artie's Princess - Kazushi Kimura will be aboard the deserving ML favorite who is trained by Wesley Ward. Artie's Princess has won 5 of 7 lifetime races. Her worst race was a Turf race at Saratoga where she finished 4th. All her other races came here at Woodbine where she has won 5 of 6 races and finished 2nd in the other one. Artie's Princess is the reigning Canadian champion female sprinter. She won her last race which was the race half this field was in. She only won by a head over the next horse #8 Boardroom.

#8 Boardroom - Luis Contreras is the only jockey that has been aboard this horse and will get the call again for the Josie Carrol trainee. Boardroom has won 3 of 5 at Woodbine with a second or third as well. She will get Lasix for the first time this race. She missed out by a head to ML favorite Artie's Princess last time out in the common race for half this field. She should get a nice trip behind the speed.

Now let's get to making some picks and see if we can find a winner. There are some horses in here that need the lead or they aren't going to be competitive in here. There might be more then 2 but for sure the only chance the #3 Summer Sunday or #5 Golden Ami has is to get out front from the beginning.  This could be a hot pace.

I'm going to use the 3 outside horses #6 Our Secret Agent, #7 Artie's Princess, and #8 Boardroom. The #7 Artie's Princess is the deserving ML favorite and will be tough however I will take the second choice #8 Boardroom as my top pick. I like the addition of Lasix after just losing by a head to #7 Artie's Princess last time out. The #6 Our Secret Agent is the value here at 10-1 ML. Will have pace to run into here and Emma-Jayne Wilson had the best opening weekend of jockeys winning 4 of her 18 mounts.

The Grade 3 Whimsical Stakes is race 9 on Woodbine's Saturday card and will take place at approximately 5:31 pm eastern on Saturday.  It's nice to have Woodbine back running. The track always seems to be competitive and always pays out really well. Good luck to all your picks and hopefully I could help you find a winner.
