STARSHIP NTERPRISE surprised everyone, including her trainer Steve Dwoskin, with alate surge in the $75,000 Martha Washington Stakes at Gulfstream Park today.
The three-year-old HONOR CODE filly was a last minute entry into the race as the race Dwoskin had chosen for her didn't fill. She broke her maiden in her ninth start, a $50,000 maiden claiming race. She entered the Martha Washington at odds of 33-1 in her stakes debut.
HANA LIMA had the lead at the quarter mile and threw the half with the 9-5 favorite, KARAKATSIE, following in second with CHARGES DROPPED in third. The trio kept their position into the stretch when STARSHIP NTERPRISE made her move, split the the leaders and hit the wire in first by a nose. KARAKATSIE finished second followed by CHARGES DROPPED.
Miguel Vasquez was aboard the filly for the first time who is co-owned by Dwoskin and Starship Stables. She finished the 1 1/16 mile test on the turf in 1:37.74.
