Horseplayers are competing for the top-prize in today's Lazy Day at Lone Star Park handicapping contest. We'll play along in a different way. Since everybody can't win the contest, let's see if we can find some winners in the last four races and put together a late pick 4 ticket.

What do you say?

Race 8 - $75,000 Grand Prairie Turf Sprint Stakes

As the name suggests, it's a short on one grass, 5 furlongs. Be close to the front out of the stall and you have a strong chance to run straight into the winners' circle. Early speed has won nearly 85% of the 31 races at the distance and surface meet to date, with 14 leading from start to finish.

Our pace analysis says SHARE THE UPSIDE (PP: 4 ML 5/2) and QUARKY (PP: 6 ML 3-1) will be the faster pair out of the box with MY BOANERGES (PP: 3 ML 7/2) in hot pursuit.

Picks: SHARE THE UPSIDE grades out as our top horse, followed by ARCHIDUST (PP: 5 ML 2-1) and MY BOANERGES. We'll start our pick 4 with these three.

Race 9 - $75,000 Wasted Tears Stakes

This on is 1 1/16 miles on the grass course and the stalkers/closers owned the edge for the 11 races meet to date. The typical winner is fourth/fifth at the 1/4 pole and third/fourth at the half. The rail has a huge advantage winning four of 11.  Inside out is the way to pay the race as post four through seven struggled comparatively.

CURLIN'S JOURNEY (PP: 2 ML 5/2), VALENTINE'S DAY (PP: 3 ML 3-1) and TIZAHRA (PP: 7 ML 9/2) should occupy the ideal positioning through the first half-mile. One quick note, ELLE'S TOWN (PP: 4 ML 4-1) might be lone speed and shake loose. If she can get modest fractions, she could be the exception to the stalker/closer edge.

Picks: CURLIN'S JOURNEY and VALENTINE'S DAY rate as the top stalkers/closer, but we have to add ELLE'S TOWN as she has a strong chance to steal the race on the lead.

Race 10 - $75,000 Chicken Fried Stakes

Is there anything better than some southern fried chicken? Anyway, we go back to 5 furlongs on the turf, seeking out of the gate dragsters. Chicken fried has a quartet of burners:

YES IT'S GINGER (PP: 3 ML 7/2), UPTOWNBLINGITHOME (PP: 4 ML 9/2), RAINTREE STARLET (PP: 6 ML 5/2) and QUICK QUICK QUICK (PP: 8 ML 4-1). YES IT'S GINGER and RAINTREE STARLET appear to have the quickest first steps of the four.

Picks: We'll take the two fastest (YES IT'S GINGER - RAINTREE STARLET) and add UPTOWNBLINGITHOME.

Race 11 - $75,000 Singletary Stakes

Welp, they don't run enough 1 1/8 miles, turf races at Lone Star to develop and pace or post position angles. It has a weird start, a little past halfway through the backside turn. With all the horses turning right away, outside horses have a clearer view of traffic and opportunity to avoid trip problems.

Picks: Closers should be the way we'll roll with ME AND MR. C (PP: 2 ML 5/2) and longshot TAPIT WISE (PP: 6 ML 15-1) as our closers. Of course, you need a speed horse just in case, DON'TASK DON'TTELL (PP: 3 ML 7/2) is our pick, but the seven-year-old is also versatile enough to close.
