Jockey Devin Magnon, 24 years old, resumes his riding career. He started riding in 2017 and made 1,214 starts, winning 109 of them. Over half of his career starts and wins came last year. In 2020 he made 628 starts and won 59 times. 2021 was set to be a big year for Devin.
However, an incident earlier this year made it look like his career and life would be changed forever. On January 14th at Delta Downs, Devin Magnon was seriously injured while aboard AUDACIOUS GIRL, who clipped heels with another horse and fell on top of Devin.
He had a whole list of injuries. He broke all the vertebrae in his neck, 7 vertebrae in his back, which he had to get 2 rods and 12 screws in. The list goes on— he also broke most of his ribs, collarbone, tailbone, and pelvis. He also had 2 brain bleeds and a punctured lung. Devin ended up staying in the hospital six nights. He was in a wheelchair for 7 weeks and had a neck brace for 9 weeks.
The horse AUDACIOUS GIRL after rolling on Devin got up and took off. After a few weeks to recover, she resumed her racing career.
Devin Magnon's first career race as a jockey came on 7/12/2017 at Evangeline. His first career win came at Delta Downs on 2/8/2018. Ironically, despite the fact Devin's first start and first win came almost 7 months apart, they were both with the same horse, D'WILD IRISH ROSE.
I got to catch up with Devin before his first race back and asked him, what is it going to feel like to be back?
Devin explained: "I've been dreaming about it for 6 months. It really puts things into perspective when something almost gets taken away in a few seconds. Definitely won't take anything for granted ever again."
Since the injury happened all Devin has thought about was will he ever race again? The answer was yes, and it happened on Wednesday June 30th. Devin was aboard YOUNG THOMAS in Race 3 at Evangeline who ended up going off at odds of 7/1. The horse broke out of the gate last and didn't do much and ended up finishing 5th out of 6 horses. Devin stated, " Yeah, we tried something new and he didn't like it."
On Thursday, July 1st, Devin had two more mounts. The first came in Race 4 on the betting favorite #3 Sixto, who is trained by his dad Jason Magnon. The horse was again off a step slow and trailed the whole backstretch. He then started making up ground around the turn, and then for the drive was rallying between a ton of traffic before coming up the inside and going past them all.
There were a lot of smiles and emotions in the winner's circle. Six months ago, Devin didn't know if life would ever get back to normal, let alone if he would ever ride again. Now on his second race back he wins a race for his dad with an absolute great ride.
The future looks bright for this 24 year old, and we cannot wait for more success to come his way. We are proud to have Devin wear our logo on his jockey pants. He reached out to us before his comeback and is an absolute pleasure to talk to. Devin is one likeable guy who deserves all the success that comes his way.
