Ruidoso Downs, elegantly placed in the picturesque Sacramento mountains of south-central New Mexico, is a legendary track that has continued to develop into an outstanding venue for horseracing and gaming. The track is best known for hosting the Labor Day running of the All-American Futurity, a $3 million guaranteed purse for two-year-old Quarter Horses.
The All-American Futurity is only part of what is called the "Triple Crown" of Quarter Horse races. The other two races are the Ruidoso Futurity and the Rainbow Futurity. All these races are run at Ruidoso. The track also features the Triple Crown Derby races for three-year-old Thoroughbred colts. Additional stakes races for two and three-year-old colts and fillies—both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds—are continually added to the Ruidoso calendar. The full meet schedule runs from mid-May through the first week of September.
Ruidoso is North America's only track that has a standard one-mile racing oval for Thoroughbreds as well as a straight track for Quarter Horses. The facility provides ample free parking for guests, though valet parking is also available. Amenities include the Billy the Kid Casino—with 300 slot machines of varying minimums, October's All-American Cowboy Fest with a rodeo and country music, and September's Golden Aspen Motorcycle Rally.
As if the setting were not breath-taking enough, Ruidoso is situated in the midst of the Mescalero Indian Reservation, and is in close proximity to Roswell (think aliens and Area 51), White Sands National Park (formerly a nuclear testing site), and three national forests. The town of Ruidoso is a Southwestern art haven.
