Only a short drive from the Gulf of Mexico, from the city of Tampa Bay, Florida, and the bay itself, Tampa Bay Downs is a Thoroughbred racetrack. It holds a position of real importance among America's more than 60 Thoroughbred tracks in large measure because of the many graded stakes races it holds: two Grade II races and five Grade III races.
Of particular interest to racing fans is Festival Day, the first weekend in March, in which the track holds the annual Tampa Bay Derby, a 1-1/16th mile race with a guaranteed purse of $400,000. This is one of only of two days in the racing year when post time is 12 p.m. instead of 12:30.
The track is open to people of all ages. Children under 12 are admitted without charge when accompanied by an adult. Adjacent to the track's parking area is a golf driving range. In addition to concessions, there are three restaurants and two lounges in the track complex. Box seats and season passes are also available.
While ongoing renovations to the Grandstand area have temporarily closed the simulcast portion of the venue, Tampa Bay Downs does have regular ongoing poker games and tournaments. Information about the venue can be seen on the track's website.
