One of the newest horseracing venues in North America is Retama Park, which is just north of San Antonio in Selma, Texas. Retama showcases both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse races during its annual meet, held in late summer from early July through early September.
Their summer meet is a mixed event, featuring several important Thoroughbred events in August, including the El Joven for two-year-old colts and the La Senorita for two-year-old fillies. Quarter Horse fans, for whom races are held in July, are treated to the annual TQHA Sales Futurity. Unlike other southeastern tracks, Retama has both dirt and turf courses.
With a spacious Grandstand and easy access to Interstate 35 and the outer San Antonio loop, Retama is a genial, family-friendly complex, where all amenities work to make guests feel welcome. Parking is free, as is admission for Selma residents and all guests on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. General admission is $7 on race days, with military patrons and senior adults paying only $4. For simulcast days, admission is $3. Children 12 and under always get in free when accompanied by an adult. The gates open at 11 a.m. daily and post time is 6:45 Thursday through Saturday.
Six different dining opportunities are available to Retama patrons, with everything from fine dining, stadium food, pizza, and hamburgers, to a sports bar. Concessions are available throughout the facility. Alcoholic beverages may be purchased in specified areas of the park.
Throughout the year, simulcast betting is open for OTB (off-track betting). The latest technological advancement in wagering for both live and OTB races is MBet, which allows players to wager from their smartphones or tablets.
